It seems I am a little behind on my blogging. If that's an indicator of how busy the library is these days, then so be it.
The library was finally able to come out from under all of that textbook business that occupies our time in August to open up again on Monday September 8. If you haven't had a chance to stop by yet, you are missing out. We have a whole new look.
The old circulation desk is gone. We now have a sleek new mobile desk that we can move wherever the action is. We removed some shelving units, so students have more table space and choices of areas in which to work. We've created a central work area that houses our Chromebook cart, copy machine and office tools along with all kinds of supplies students might need for homework or creative projects. The game tables and textbooks are both still nearby, but everything is arranged with flexibility in mind. I think we just may have achieved our goal of becoming a learning commons.
We still hold true to some "old school" library practices, but have added a new twist on at least one of them. Students can still accrue overdue library fines if they don't remember to renew or return on time. However, we are offering to remove fines from their records if they make a donation to the RBV food bank. Helping themselves and helping other students at the same time is a good feeling.
As always, the library staff is here to help in any way we can. Try to stop by one day soon; you'll be glad you did.
